Balls 1-7 are called solids and balls 9-16 are called stripes. Only then are you allowed to pocket the 8-ball in order to win. 9 ball: 9 ball pool game is being played with 9 object balls numbered 1 through 9 and a cue ball. On each shot, the first ball the cue ball contacts must be the lowest numbered ball on the table, but the balls need not be pocketed in order.
