Pool games, (aka pocket billiard games) include every cue sports game taken on a rectangle, cloth-covered table with 6 pockets (as opposed to carom billiard games, which take place on a table that has no pockets). Pool games are the most popular billiard games in America.
There are many types of pool games. Most of them are one-on-one games that involve 15 object balls. Some pool games, such as cutthroat or baseball can be played by three or more players, respectively. There are even pool games for single player (speed pool). The most popular pool games in the US are eight ball and nine ball. For that reason, these pool games appear in most online pool websites.
Popular Pool GamesEight ball pool is the favorite pool game of amateur and recreational players around the world. In the UK, where snooker gains wider popularity, it is known as American eight ball. The pool game eight ball was developed during the 1920s when it was first called BBC Co. pool. Eight ball pool is played with two groups of object balls (solid balls and striped balls), the black 8-ball and the white cue ball. Each player is assigned one group of object balls, which he has to pocket throughout the game. The object of the game is to legally pocket the 8-ball after pocketing the entire group of object balls.
Nine Ball PoolNine ball pool, on the other hand, is the number one choice of almost every professional pool player around the States. The pool game that was mostly known as the pool hustlers' game is currently played in many pool tournaments and championships worldwide.
Nine ball pool is a two players game played with 9 object balls and the cue ball. Nine ball is a rotation game in which the players have to first hit the lowest numbered ball on the table on each shot. The object of the pool game is to legally pocket the 9-ball.
Other popular pool games include straight pool, also known as 14.1 continuous, one pocket pool and folk pool games such as cutthroat, baseball pool and more.
